Averno 101

Welcome to Averno Bible Cover
What is Averno?

Averno is a transmedia universe- think the Marvel universe, but with musicals (and comics and novels and more) about witches. All of the storylines interlock in the small town of Averno, VA.

It defies all the rules and norms of storytelling. Are you confused? Lost?

Yeah. We all are. The human mind works by using schemas- conceptual sets against which we compare our experiences.

Nothing like Averno has existed before. Our brains don’t know what to do with it because we don’t have a comparison point for it. The best I can do is give you some touchstones:

Averno is like-

The Marvel Universe, but with musicals about gay witches.

Harry Potter, but with messier, wilder forms of magic. Older and hungrier.

Welcome to Nightvale, but with a broader, more clearly defined system.

It is musicals and podcasts and comics and magic.

It is Starkid, but with all the shows in the same universe.

It is those weird core/ dream core Tiktoks, achingly and sometimes disturbingly familiar.

It is creepypastas and Lumberjanes at the same time.

It is Over the Garden Wall, but with a whole town.

It is Heathers, but with more cults.

It is, on the whole, messy and never-ending. But it is also home.

A Little More About Averno

In this town, the things in the woods aren’t the ones you need to fear.

Averno, VA was founded in 1695. In 1702, it was razed to the ground. In 1703, it was refounded- better. “Purer”.

Shadows lurk in the woods, ready and waiting. The eyes are always watching. Children disappear. Storefronts never change. There are always whispers.

Welcome to Averno.

Averno is a new multimedia universe that defies genre and encompasses an ever-growing roster of stories- currently 13 musicals, four novels, a TV Show, a podcast, a concept album, a webcomic musical, virtual reality, and more.

Set over the course of 300 years, the through-line of the various projects isn’t a single character- instead, it follows the secrets, lies, histories and mysteries that enshroud the town of Averno.

Conspiracies and cults, sinners and saviors, Averno has it all. A love letter to southern gothic, the occult, and the seedy underbellies of seemingly peaceful towns everywhere, Averno is a sprawling map of the secrets that intertwine humanity, the horrors we inflict on each other, and the mysteries we can never unravel.
